The short answer
A clear assignment has three parts: an introduction that sets up your answer, a body that makes your points with evidence, and a conclusion that ties it together. Add references, then check it against the brief and rubric before you submit.
The basic structure
- Introduction (about 10%): what the assignment is about, your main point, and how you will cover it.
- Body (about 80%): one idea per paragraph, each built with the PEEL method below.
- Conclusion (about 10%): sum up your points and answer the question. No new evidence here.
- References: every source in your required style.
Plan before you write
1. Read the brief and rubric twice. Underline the task words: analyse, compare, discuss, evaluate.
2. Note the word count and how marks are weighted.
3. Research and gather your sources.
4. Outline your paragraphs, one point each.
5. Draft, then edit.
The paragraph method: PEEL
Build each body paragraph in four moves:
- Point: state the idea in the first sentence.
- Evidence: give a source, example or data.
- Explain: say what the evidence shows and why it matters.
- Link: connect back to the question or on to the next point.
Match the brief and rubric
Marks come from the rubric, not from guesswork. Map each rubric line to a part of your assignment, and make sure every criterion is covered. If a rubric line is worth a lot, give it more words.
Checklist before you submit

It hits the word count. See how to write a 1500 word essay for a worked split.
It uses headings where the type of assignment allows them.
Every source is referenced. Pick the right style with referencing styles explained, and for bigger projects see how to structure a dissertation.
Before you submit, run your draft through Plag Check for a Turnitin similarity and AI report in about 15 minutes. Your draft is not stored in Turnitin’s database, so it will not come back as a match when you hand in.
